VOLUNTEERS

Thank you:

Thank you for showing interest in volunteering in the Guerneville District. Every community has a stake in student success and your help truly does make a difference in the lives of our students. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and District Administration thank you for sharing your valuable time to support our students.

Our goal is to effectively and safely use parent and community volunteers. Board Policy and the Education Code require screening of all volunteers whether it is short-term, project-specific, or ongoing volunteer work.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Human Resources at 707.869.2864 X110 or lnavarro@guernevilleschool.org.

Volunteers:

A volunteer is a non-paid individual who, with school District authorization, regularly assists students, schools, or educational programs. The service can be short-term, project-specific, or ongoing. Volunteers can assist under the direction and/or direct and indirect supervision of a school staff member, or District employee.

All volunteers must complete a:

  • Volunteer Application (annual)
  •  Code of Conduct (annual)
  • Provide proof they are clear of tuberculosis | TB ( every 4 years)
  • Department of Education & FBI  fingerprint/background check  (once in a lifetime)

Volunteers may be assigned work deemed necessary and approved by a Site Administrator. GSD reserves the right to authorize, deny authorization, and revoke authorization for all volunteers. All volunteers must be cleared by the district prior to participating in school activities.

How to Volunteer

Your knowledge and skills can enrich the educational program. For the benefit and protection of students, volunteers, and others, state laws and District policies require you to be aware of the following:

  • Volunteers must work in the presence of GSD staff. Any exception must be approved by the Superintendent or Vice Principal.
  • Volunteers working with students must be under the direct supervision of a District employee (Education Code Section 35021).
  •  Unsalaried volunteers are covered by the District's Workers' Compensation Insurance (Labor Code Section 3364.5)

How to get started:

The following documents must be on file with HR before beginning your volunteer service:

  • Complete the Volunteer Application and sign the Code of Conduct (each school year) and return it to the school office
  • The HR will reach out to you via email with Livescan instructions
  • *Tuberculosis Clearance (TB) The TB skin test or Risk assessment must be renewed every 4 years, and the TB chest x-ray, every 10 years.*
  • You receive an email from HR letting you know you are all cleared.

* Where can you obtain a TB Clearance?

Your medical provider, if you are not able to use your medical provider our school nurse can complete the Risk Assessment forms please contact nurse@guernevilleschool.org to schedule. Our school nurse is only on campus 1 day/per week please do not drop-in.

Background Check/Livescan

GSD requires that all volunteer candidates be fingerprinted as part of a criminal background check. Including volunteers who work under the direct supervision of a District, employees are required to be fingerprinted. The Livescan is processed by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Volunteer candidates may be authorized as volunteers, based upon the discretion of the District, and must be cleared or authorized as volunteers, prior to contact with students. Volunteers at this time are not charged for the Livescan fee, this is subject to change based on funding.

Compliance with Public Health Guidelines

Volunteers shall adhere to applicable and mandatory Public Health Guidance, including guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health and the County Public Health Department. In addition, volunteers must comply with GSD’s health and safety policies.

Q & A

How long is my volunteer clearance valid?

Volunteers are required to complete a Volunteer Form each school year. However, Tuberculosis clearance is valid for 4 years, and fingerprint clearance is valid for as long as you are a volunteer in the GSD.

How long will the volunteer clearance process take?
The amount can vary. It typically takes 2- weeks, depending on how quickly we receive fingerprint and TB clearance.

How will I know when I am cleared to be a volunteer?
The District will notify volunteers via email when they are cleared. If you have questions about the process, you can contact the school office.
